2022 Sachsenring Moto3 Qualifying Result: No Surprises Here

The lightweight class opened the qualifying show and provided some early drama, with poorly timed tumbles in Q1 and a perfectly timed pole position lap from, predictably, Izan Guevara. The Spaniard bided his time in the session – helped by some early yellow flags – and waited until the final couple of minutes to show his speed, improving his own all-time lap record in the process. That left a three tenths’ gap behind him on the timesheets, that Dennis Foggia only reduced by a couple of hundredths at the chequered flag. The two usual suspects will be joined on the front row of the grid by Daniel Holgado, the rookie demoted from the top of the timing screens in the final minute of the session.

Ayumu Sasaki also spent the early part of Q2 sitting pretty at the top of the pile, but had to settle for fourth in the end, sharing second row with compatriots Tatsuki Suzuki and Ryusei Yamanaka. David Muñoz continues his excellent debut in the world championship with a third row start, nine thousandths of a second quicker than championship leader Sergio Garcia and another hundredth ahead of lucky Q2 graduate Matteo Bertelle. Scott Ogden rounded out the top 10 positions, sharing fourth row with Joel Kelso and Andrea Migno.

John McPhee opens the fifth row of the grid, with Q1 leader Adrian Fernandez close behind and Riccardo Rossi completing the line-up after a tricky afternoon with a late tumble in Q1. Similarly to the man just ahead of him, Xavier Artigas also sampled the gravel late in Q1 and a quick repair job allowed him to join Q2 and share sixth row with Carlos Tatay and Jaume Masia – the KTM rider crashing out before posting a time in the session. Although Diogo Moreira missed out on Q2 by only four hundredths of a second, the big loser of Q1 was Deniz Öncü, who was quickest at the chequered flag but his top time was cancelled due to exceeding track limits, dropping him to 24th on the grid.
