2022 Silverstone MotoGP FP3 Result: Espargaro Back In The Limelight

Another uncharacteristically sunny morning in Silverstone settled the battle over Q2 places but it was not peculiar in the slightest to see Aleix Espargaro at the top of the timing screens, knocking at the doors of the all-time lap record (but getting no answer just yet). Aprilia came to the fore in the final third of the session but their Spanish duo was eventually separated on the timesheets by a trio of Ducatis led by Jorge Martin. The youngster was running so low on fuel that he had to hitchhike to pitlane after the chequered flag, but his time attack brought him within three hundredths of a second of top spot. Jack Miller carried the flag for the factory team from third, ahead of Johann Zarco, who caused some late yellow flags at turn 13 while threatening the lap record as well.

The late attacks dropped Maverick Viñales to fifth position, ahead of Fabio Quartararo, the championship leader ending practice three tenths slower than his main rival. Speaking of, Espargaro also managed to become involved in some extremely mild drama as he distracted Pecco Bagnaia on a late flying lap - without even showing off his brand new platinum blonde locks – but all was forgotten once the Italian climbed into seventh on his final lap. The Suzukis of Joan Mir and Alex Rins sandwiched Luca Marini in the rest of the top 10, leaving Marco Bezzecchi out of Q2 contention by two tenths of a second. The rookie will have strong competition in Q1 from the likes of Enea Bastianini in 12th place and the lead KTM of Miguel Oliveira in 14th.
