2022 Buriram Moto2 Qualifying Result: The Makings Of A Fairy Tale

Even the sun came out to spectate the qualifying battle for the intermediate class and, to the delight of the home crowd, Somkiat Chantra secured a first career pole position on his favourite playground. The Thai rider started off with a sizeable advantage while yellow flags halted his rivals for a while, but Tony Arbolino eventually closed the gap to only eight hundredths of a second. The Italian will be surrounded by the Honda Team Asia duo on the front row of the grid, with Ai Ogura climbing into third, two tenths off pole.

Fresh off the announcement that he’s staying with the Ajo squad next year, Pedro Acosta secured a solid fourth place, while Celestino Vietti picked up the pace to cruise through Q1 and claim fifth on the grid. Alonso Lopez joins them on the second row, while Jake Dixon opens row three, ahead of championship leader Augusto Fernandez and compatriot Jorge Navarro. Having had to miss the previous race due to injury, Manuel Gonzalez making the top 10 was all the more impressive, sharing row four with Cameron Beaubier and Filip Salac.

Q1 escapee Bo Bendsneyder leads the way on row five, ahead of Jeremy Alcoba and with Albert Arenas much less celebratory of his new contract with the Ajo team, the Spaniard dropping to 15th after a scary tangle with Joe Roberts early in Q2. The American was slow on his feet but looked generally unharmed and will have to start down on row six, in between local favourite Keminth Kubo and the unlucky Aron Canet, who crashed before posting a time. Meanwhile, the returning Sam Lowes missed out on Q2 by only one hundredth of a second and will be starting 19th on the grid, ahead of Lorenzo Dalla Porta and Fermín Aldeguer.
