2022 Phillip Island Moto2 FP3 Result: Lopez Leaps Ahead

By Zara Daniela | Sat, 15/10/2022 - 00:51

Phillip Island greeted the intermediate class with a nearly spotless blue sky and delightfully dry asphalt – and no one was more delighted than Alonso Lopez, the freshly sanctioned Spaniard promptly putting one second into his rivals, who spent the rest of the session catching up. There were several challengers but the closest came teammate Fermín Aldeguer, the rookie closing to three tenths of a second behind his compatriot. Augusto Fernandez and Aron Canet added some more Spanish flour to the top four, with Jake Dixon breaking the stronghold by taking fifth.

Pedro Acosta probably had the least experience of the lot when it came to Phillip Island, never racing the track before and having missed the entirety of FP1 due to crash damage, but the rookie did great to claim sixth on the timesheets. Tony Arbolino left it late to improve but did so to take seventh position, while Joe Roberts, Bo Bendsneyder and Filip Salac rounded out the top 10, as the final men to post a time within a second of the leader.

Title contender Ai Ogura had a subdued morning down in 11th position, ahead of Jeremy Alcoba and Cameron Beaubier, but the same could not be said of Sam Lowes, who took a fast and late tumble at turn eight. The Marc VDS man just about held onto a precious Q2 ticket by five hundredths of a second, with Manuel Gonzalez missing out alongside Albert Arenas (who also ended the morning with a similar tumble) and Celestino Vietti. Meanwhile, Somkiat Chantra didn’t even get a lap in, having crashed on the outlap at the infamous turn eight.
