Patches of blue sky were getting rarer and rarer throughout the qualifying sessions in the intermediate class and although rain never became a concern, Fermín Aldeguer appeared to be in a rush to sort out pole and secure an all-time lap record on his second timed lap. Some red sectors eventually animated the timing screens, from both Aldeguer and teammate Alonso Lopez, but the enthusiasm was short-lived, as some geese traffic prompted a red flag with 36 seconds remaining, sealing the deal on Aldeguer’s second pole of his rookie season. Augusto Fernandez separated the Speed Up duo on the front row, the championship leader only seven hundredths of a second off pole. Lopez was all the more frustrated to miss out on a final attack for pole, as the youngster has a long lap penalty to serve for causing a crash in FP1.
Tony Arbolino opens the second row ahead of Aron Canet and Q1 graduate Celestino Vietti, who posted an identical time to Q1 colleague Manuel Gonzalez. The Spaniard will share an all-Spanish third row with Pedro Acosta and Jeremy Alcoba, while Filip Salac rounded out the top 10 positions ahead of Cameron Beaubier and a more cautious Sam Lowes. With his main title rival for rows ahead, Ai Ogura will hope for a lightning start and some damage limitation, the Japanese rider down in 13th grid position, sharing fifth row with an equally underwhelming Jake Dixon and Joe Roberts – the American a full second slower than the poleman.
Q1 escapees Somkiat Chantra and Lorenzo Dalla Porta sandwich Bo Bendsneyder on row six, while Albert Arenas is stuck in 19th position after an early tumble out of Q1, which made him miss out on Q2 by eight hundredths of a second.
