2022 Sepang Moto2 Qualifying Result: The Tide Turns

Qualifying time for the intermediate class was surprisingly and welcomingly dry and it allowed Ai Ogura to steal the show by posting the fastest time of the weekend halfway through Q2. Despite occasional flashes of red on the timing screens, the championship leader’s position was never under threat again and Ogura sealed a precious pole. Tony Arbolino was only eight hundredths of a second off prime spot, with Aron Canet completing the front row once more.

Jake Dixon missed out by half a tenth and will be joined on the second row by excellent rookie Manuel Gonzalez and title contender Augusto Fernandez. Somkiat Chantra will be looking to help his teammate from seventh on the grid, ahead of rookie Pedro Acosta and with Cameron Baubier joining them on the third row at the last minute. Alonso Lopez completed the top 10 in qualifying, sharing fourth row with Q1 leader Joe Roberts and Bo Bendsneyder, while Albert Arenas got the unlucky 13th, ahead of Marcel Schrotter and Q1 escapee Lorenzo Dalla Porta.

Fermín Aldeguer was over a second off pole down in 16th position and will be joined on sixth row by Niccolò Antonelli – the Italian making his first Q2 appearance in Moto2 despite a tumble halfway through Q1. Filip Salac also escaped Q1 but a tumble on his first lap sealed his faith in 18th grid position. The Mooney VR46 team was full of surprises and not all of them that great, with Celestino Vietti underwhelmingly stuck in Q1 and starting 20th on the grid.
