2022 Sepang Moto3 Qualifying Result: Game On For Second Best

By Zara Daniela | Sat, 22/10/2022 - 05:33

Despite the rain flag scare earlier today, the lightweight class escaped any serious weather worries and fought for the penultimate pole position of the season under clear blue skies. Although Sasaki and Garcia made their pole ambitions known, the honour eventually went to Dennis Foggia, the Italian posting a new all time lap record for Moto3 around Sepang on his final flying lap. He was joined at the front by newly crowned world champion Izan Guevara, who was two tenths of a second slower, while teammate Sergio Garcia made a slow start but climbed from 17th to 3rd in the closing stages, to fill the front row of the grid.

Jaume Masia settled for the second row by seven hundredths of a second, joined by teammate Dani Holgado and veteran Andrea Migno, while Ayumu Sasaki dropped to 7th position in the closing stages, failing to improve on his early benchmark. Tatsuki Suzuki joins his compatriot on row three, as does Riccardo Rossi, the trio around half a second off pole. FP3 leader David Muñoz settled for a top 10 and opening fourth row from fellow rookie Diogo Moreira and the more experienced Stefano Nepa.

Q1 leader Ryusei Yamanaka secured a fourth row start ahead of rookies Ivan Ortolá and Taiyo Furusato, while the CIP duo of Joel Kelso and Kaito Toba sandwich Carlos Tatay on row five – the Spaniard only posting a couple of lap times before a crash ended his session early. The more unpleasant surprises of Q1 came from an underwhelming John McPhee qualifying 22nd and a costly crash from Deniz Öncü leaving him 25th on the grid.
