At a track where Jonathan Rea has had much success, he ended the opening session of the weekend under a tenth of a second quicker than Alvaro Bautista whose session ended in the pits after a crash. Toprak Razgatlioglu was third quickest. Alex Lowes was the only rider outside the top three to be in striking distance of the podium as fifth-placed Andrea Locatelli was over a second off pole pace.

Alex Lowes
Keep an eye on Alex Lowes. 22 went well, good top speed. 5 k faster than Jonathan.
Congratulations to Nagashima rode very well for his first time at Philip Island. Learning the corners and cambers.
Moto2
Nagashima spent 8 years in Moto2, I'm pretty sure he didn't need to learn anything track-wise ;-)
Thanks janbros
I had a vague memory of him. First time on the superbike here according to the commentators.
