I do not know if anyone will remember this, but in the late 1990s or early 2000s there was a relatively unknown NASCAR driver named Alan Kulwicki. This was before "The Chase" and he lurked in the top ten in points for the entire season. I cannot remember if he won any races, but he was consistently running at the front. Anyway, in the last handful of races he snuck into the top five in points. For the final race of the season, there were two or three other drivers ahead of him in the points, and the consensus was that one of those drivers would take the championship. Somehow Kulwicki placed high enough in the points and his competitors low enough that he snuck in and won the championship. People were stunned, because even though he was mathematically capable of winning the championship, he was nowhere near the best driver.

Could this be Andrea Dovizioso? Lurking in the shadows of the Aliens and his Repsol HRC teammates. Hmmmmm.
